Today in Disney History: Indiana Jones Adventure Attraction Opens at Disneyland

“Embark on a fast-paced thrill ride in search of Indiana Jones - enter this cursed temple at your own risk!

An Ancient Legend

Follow Indy’s footsteps into the crumbling Temple of the Forbidden Eye past intricate booby traps. Inspect carvings and frescos that tell the story of Mara, a powerful deity who promises great treasures - and vengeance to those foolish enough to gaze into its all-seeing eyes.

Brave Unimaginable Perils

Board a rugged troop transport and enter the Chamber of Destiny. Confront inconceivable dangers, like precarious precipices over molten lava, screaming mummies, swarms of giant insects, spear-throwing wraiths, collapsing bridges, slithering snakes - and a massive rolling boulder.

If you find yourself in jeopardy, only one man is brave enough - or crazy enough - to save you … Dr. Jones!” - Disneyland Website

The Indiana Jones Adventure attraction at Disneyland opened on this day in 1995. It was the first new attraction to debut in Adventureland since Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room opened in 1963. This was the third time the Walt Disney Company and George Lucas collaborated on an attraction, following Captain EO and Star Tours. At the time of its opening, the attraction was the most expensive ever with estimates well over $100 million. In comparison, Disneyland was built at a cost of approximately $17 million. In order to make room for the attraction the former “Eeyore” parking lot was demolished and the Monorail tracks and The Jungle Cruise river had to be rerouted. The attraction pays homage to the former “Eeyore” parking lot area with one of the signs hidden in the queue. Indiana Jones Adventure has gone through numerous refurbishments with small updates here and there but is essentially the same ride today that is was back in 1995.
